Nutmeg is a very popular spice in India and for good reason, because aside from flavoring your food – it also has many health and wellness benefits.
But it’s not just popular in India, it’s also quite popular here in the US and lots of other countries.
Let’s take a quick look at why nutmeg rocks as a health agent and how you can use it for different homemade remedies or simply to heal minor ailments.

My dear old great-grandmother, born in 1870’s, used a nutmeg poultice for cold congestion relief. I have used it, too, and it works!
Use a piece of cotton flannel, about 1 foot square, and smear lard or goose grease (i.e., duck fat) on half of it. Sprinkle generously with nutmeg spice and fold the clean side over this. Heat or warm (I use my microwave today). Pin to your nightclothes over the chest. There is something about its pungency that has given relief for five generations.

- Breath-freshener – because of its anti bacterial properties, many use nutmeg to cure or alleviate bad breath. What they do is apply nutmeg oil to gums or use a mixture of baking soda and nutmeg powder.
- Indigestion – Nutmeg can serve as a natural antacid. It can remove gas from your belly causing relief from your upset stomach, indigestion and or bloating, etc.
- Sleep Aid – although some use Ginger tea for sleep aid purposes, Nutmeg can also serve as a similar remedy. Combine warm milk and nutmeg powder – these two ingredients alone should help get you a peaceful night’s sleep – naturally.
